Carolina Shores started as a neighborhood golfing community within Calabash, NC that became a town in 1998. The split came after years of disagreements between the two parties. The 2.5-mile area has town limits interlocking with Calabash but does not actually border any water despite what the name implies.

After strong hurricanes and massive flooding, the town’s dam broke at the major lakes which caused the lakes to drain. The area is named for its natural spring which was discovered in a wooden rivine by developers in 1961.
